Just up the road from the barn, Westwell Wine Estates is the vineyard we send almost every guest to. It’s a small, family-run estate on the chalk slopes at the foot of the North Downs, and it shows in every glass — low-intervention winemaking that lets the Kent terroir do the talking. The two-hour tours run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and cover everything from pruning to pressing, but you don’t need to book a tour to visit — turn up on an open day for a glass of something cold, a cheese and charcuterie board, and views across the vines. Dogs are welcome throughout, and so are large parties and drop-ins, which suits the relaxed way we like to do things.
Go on a warm Saturday afternoon if you can, when the terrace is at its best and there’s usually something good on the board. It’s an easy, unhurried way to spend a few hours, and exactly the kind of slow afternoon this corner of Kent does so well.
